Teach your Child(ren) about Gambling: How I taught my child about gambling!

Teaching Moment: Teach your Child(ren) about Gambling

A short story

I love watching reality shows and when they are child friendly, I watch them with my children. There is a new reality show on Netflix called dance100 and I decided to watch it a few days ago.

My child watched on and off with me when I was watching it.

For the finale, they settled by me so we could watch it together. I asked who they thought will win the show.

They choose Keenan and I choose Brandi. Before I chose Brandi, I went online and checked who won the show. Then I decided to use that as a teaching moment to teach them about gambling.

So I told my child, "If Keenan wins, I will give you $5 and if Brandi wins, you will give me $5". My child was excited and screamed, "yes I am in. Keenan is going to win and I will take your $5 and add it to my saving and have $130."

My partner warned them severally that I was cheating and they should not bet with me. My child did not back out and was really hoping to win the $5.

Let me add here that, there was a point in the show where they felt that Brandi was good and  they voiced it out, that she could win the show. But they still did not back out and kept hoping that Keenan will win.

When it was time for them to announce the winner, my child exclaimed,

"Mummy! My tummy! My tummy hurts! It feels like it's going to explode"

I burst out laughing. I think they were trying to explain that they were anxious.

Then they announced the winner, and Brandi won.

My child immediately started crying.

When we asked what was wrong, they mention it was because they were about to lose $5 instead of gaining it.

My partner called them and they had a talk about gambling, it's impact and why they need to stay away from it and not bet again.

In the end, no $5 was transferred but a lesson was learnt.

We will continue to educate and guide them about gambling.

Betting and gambling is destroying many lives, this is why I capitalized on that opportunity to educate my child. Find your teaching moments and continue to educate and guide your children.

And until next time, know that

You are enough, you are worthy!

Learn to Live life in the present

And know that nothing last forever so everything will be fine!

Take care of YOU, YOU are all you've got!
